GrabPay, ShopeePay and Singtel Dash can all hold wallet balances in Singapore, but they no longer provide the same type of payment access. GrabPay is closely tied to Grab services and participating GrabPay merchants, ShopeePay combines Shopee checkout with merchant and cross-border QR payments, while Dash adds a Visa virtual card, Visa contactless payments, public transport use and overseas remittance.
The distinction matters in 2026 because the former GrabPay Mastercard is no longer available, ShopeePay has expanded into overseas partner QR networks, and Dash has introduced changes affecting PayNow VPA registration and app-based top-ups. These stored-value wallets also work differently from card-wallet services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, which generally use an existing payment card rather than relying on a separate e-wallet balance.

GrabPay vs ShopeePay vs Singtel Dash
The main difference is not simply rewards or app preference. Each wallet connects to a different set of payment rails, and the route used to put money into the wallet can also determine whether that money can later be transferred out.
| Feature | GrabPay | ShopeePay | Singtel Dash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Role | Grab ecosystem, GrabPay merchants and wallet transfers | Shopee checkout, merchant QR and overseas partner QR payments | Wallet, Visa payments, transit, local transfers and remittance |
| Maximum Wallet Balance | Up to S$5,000 | S$1,000 unverified; S$5,000 with ShopeePay PLUS | S$999 unverified; S$3,000 verified Work Permit holder; S$5,000 verified non-WP |
| Annual Wallet Debit or Spend Limit | Generally S$30,000; up to S$60,000 for eligible users, subject to the limit shown in the app | S$5,000 unverified; S$30,000 with ShopeePay PLUS | S$20,000 unverified; S$100,000 verified for combined spend, remittance and cash-out |
| Merchant QR Payments | Yes, where the merchant offers GrabPay | Yes, at participating ShopeePay merchants | Yes, through supported Dash, FavePay and PayNow payment routes |
| General Visa or Mastercard Contactless | No current GrabPay Card route; the former Mastercard was discontinued | No general card-network wallet card | Visa Contactless on supported phones |
| Virtual Card for Online Card Checkout | No current GrabPay Mastercard | No general ShopeePay Visa or Mastercard wallet card | Dash Visa Virtual Card |
| MRT and Bus Payments | Former GrabPay Card transit route is no longer available | No direct transit wallet function listed | Supported through the Dash Visa payment route on compatible devices |
| Transfer to Bank | Yes from eligible transferable balance after verification | Yes for ShopeePay PLUS from eligible transferable balance | Available to eligible verified users, subject to account and transaction limits |
| Overseas Merchant Payments | Only through supported GrabPay payment routes; do not assume general Mastercard acceptance | Supported at listed international partner QR networks for verified users | Visa overseas payments supported; foreign exchange and processing rules depend on the transaction |
| Overseas Remittance | Availability depends on the specific Grab service and eligibility | Cross-border merchant payment is the clearer consumer use case rather than general remittance | Dedicated Dash Remit service |
| Fee to Watch | Foreign payment, funding-source or other charges may depend on the transaction route | 2% admin fee currently applies to Amex and YouTrip card top-ups | 2% card top-up fee; S$0.50 selected cash top-up fee; 2.8% on qualifying SGD transactions processed outside Singapore |

Limits are not interchangeable with wallet balance. A wallet may allow a higher annual amount of transactions than the maximum amount that can be stored at one time. Verification status, transaction type and the limit displayed in the app can also restrict an individual transaction.
Which Wallet Fits Different Payment Uses?
GrabPay has the clearest fit when the wallet balance is being used inside the Grab ecosystem or with merchants that explicitly offer GrabPay. It also supports transfers from transferable wallet balance after the required account verification.
ShopeePay combines Shopee checkout with participating offline merchants. Verified users can also activate overseas payments and use supported partner QR networks in multiple countries.
Dash differs most clearly through its Visa Virtual Card, Visa Contactless support, MRT and bus payment capability and dedicated overseas remittance service.
There is no need to treat the three wallets as direct substitutes. A person who mainly pays within Grab has a different payment pattern from someone who wants a Visa contactless wallet or someone who expects to scan merchant QR codes while travelling.
GrabPay Wallet in Singapore
GrabPay and GrabPay Wallet are not identical terms. Grab describes GrabPay as its collection of cashless payment methods, while GrabPay Wallet is the stored-value mobile wallet holding the user’s GrabPay balance. The distinction matters when comparing the wallet with other Singapore e-wallets.

Where GrabPay Wallet Can Be Used
Grab’s current payment terms allow GrabPay Wallet to be used with transportation providers, merchants and agents that lawfully offer GrabPay through supported routes such as static or dynamic QR payment, settlement within the Grab app or online settlement.
For online purchases, participating merchants can offer GrabPay Online at checkout. In physical stores, acceptance depends on the merchant offering the relevant GrabPay payment option. A GrabPay balance should therefore not be treated as a universal card balance that automatically works at every card terminal.
The Former GrabPay Card Is No Longer a Payment Route
The physical and digital GrabPay Card were discontinued from 1 June 2024. The wallet itself continued, but the former Mastercard route that allowed wallet funds to be spent wherever the card was accepted did not.
This is an important distinction for older GrabPay instructions still visible online. A page describing the former GrabPay Mastercard as usable at Mastercard merchants, for online card purchases or for public transport does not describe the current consumer card product in 2026. The discontinuation was publicly reported when Grab announced the closure of both the physical and digital cards.
GrabPay Balance and Annual Limits
Grab’s current Singapore payment terms set a maximum GrabPay Credits balance of S$5,000, or a lower amount notified through the app. Total consumer payment transactions using the wallet in a calendar year are generally capped at S$30,000, with a limit of up to S$60,000 applying to eligible users.
The balance ceiling and annual transaction ceiling serve different purposes. A user can spend and replenish the wallet during the year without holding the full annual amount at once. The limit shown inside the account remains relevant because Grab can apply a lower limit than the published maximum.
Transferable and Non-Transferable GrabPay Balance
GrabPay divides wallet funds into transferable and non-transferable balances. This affects whether money placed in the wallet can later move to a Singapore bank account or another supported wallet.
| GrabPay Balance Type | What It Means | Bank Transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Transferable Balance | Eligible wallet funds that can be moved outside the GrabPay wallet after verification requirements are met | Yes, subject to transfer limits and supported routes |
| Credit Card Top-Ups | Listed by Grab as excluded from transferable balance | No through the normal transferable-balance route |
| Foreign Debit Card Top-Ups | Also excluded from transferable balance | No through the normal transferable-balance route |
A user must fully verify the required profile details and set up GrabPIN before using wallet transfers. Grab’s funds-transfer page states that eligible transferable funds can move to local accounts through the FAST and PayNow network. The broader mechanics of PayNow in Singapore are separate from the wallet’s own eligibility rules.
Grab currently states a maximum transfer of S$5,000 per transaction and up to two transfers to bank accounts or e-wallets per day. Transfers to the user’s own PayNow-linked account do not count toward the annual wallet spending limit, while transfers to other accounts or wallets can count. Local bank-account transfers rely on Singapore’s FAST transfer network.
GrabRewards on Wallet Spending
Grab currently advertises up to 0.5% back in GrabRewards points for eligible spending with GrabPay Wallet. Points are a loyalty benefit rather than additional cash held in the wallet, and campaign rates, redemption options and eligibility can change separately from the stored-value rules.
GrabPay limits and wallet rules can be checked in the Grab payment terms, while transfer mechanics are published on the GrabPay funds transfer page.
ShopeePay in Singapore
ShopeePay is issued within the Shopee app and can be used for purchases on Shopee, transactions with participating offline merchants, transfers between eligible users and withdrawals to a bank account when the account and balance meet the applicable conditions.
The largest functional difference within ShopeePay itself is verification. An unverified ShopeePay Wallet has lower balance and spending limits, while a fully verified account becomes ShopeePay PLUS and gains transfer capability.
ShopeePay Wallet vs ShopeePay PLUS
| Limit or Function | ShopeePay Wallet | ShopeePay PLUS |
|---|---|---|
| Verification | Unverified | Fully verified |
| Wallet / Top-Up Limit | S$1,000 | S$5,000 |
| Single Spend Limit | Up to S$1,000 | Up to S$5,000 |
| Annual Spend Limit | S$5,000 | S$30,000 |
| Transfers | Not available to other users or bank accounts | Available, subject to eligible balance and applicable limits |
ShopeePay also applies a default S$1,000 per-transaction limit as a security control. Verified users can adjust the limit up to S$5,000, and Shopee states that a transaction-limit increase takes effect after a 12-hour waiting period.
ShopeePay Does Not Mean Every QR Code Is Accepted
Offline ShopeePay payments work with participating merchants. The customer can scan a merchant’s ShopeePay QR code or, where supported, present the wallet’s QR code or barcode for the merchant to scan.
The presence of a QR code at a checkout does not by itself mean ShopeePay will work. The merchant and displayed payment scheme must support ShopeePay or an applicable partner route. This becomes especially relevant where one checkout area displays several QR payment brands.
ShopeePay Top-Up Source Changes What You Can Do With the Money
The funding source is one of the most useful details to check before adding a large amount to ShopeePay. Some top-ups are transferable and withdrawable, while others can only be used for payments.
| Funding Source | Use for Payments | Transferable | Withdrawable |
|---|---|---|---|
| PayNow | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Eligible Local Debit Card | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| eGIRO Linked Bank Account | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Credit Card, Multi-Source Card or Foreign Debit Card | Yes | No | No |
Shopee describes multi-source cards as cards that can switch between credit and debit funding sources. A card labelled as a debit card should therefore not automatically be assumed to produce withdrawable ShopeePay balance if it falls within this category.
The 2% Amex and YouTrip Top-Up Fee
ShopeePay currently applies a 2% admin fee to top-ups made using American Express and YouTrip cards. The fee applies to the top-up transaction and is shown before payment.
S$100 example: a S$100 top-up subject to the 2% admin fee produces a S$2 fee, so the amount charged to the funding card is S$102.
ShopeePay Overseas QR Payments
Verified ShopeePay users can enable overseas payments and pay participating foreign merchants through supported international QR networks. Shopee currently tells users to look for partner marks including Alipay+, Weixin Pay, DuitNow, Zero Pay, Kakao and Alipay HK.
This is not universal overseas acceptance. The user must have a verified wallet with overseas payments enabled, and the foreign merchant must participate in a supported partner network. Shopee’s published list currently covers markets including Malaysia, China, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, among others.
The overseas checkout displays the foreign-currency amount, applicable exchange rate, converted SGD amount and any applicable fee or discount before confirmation. This makes it useful to compare the final SGD cost rather than looking only at the merchant’s local-currency price. Singapore travellers using QR payments in nearby markets may also need to distinguish this wallet-based route from Singapore’s separate cross-border QR payment links.
Shopee publishes current account limits in its ShopeePay transaction limits, funding rules in its ShopeePay top-up information and foreign merchant coverage in its overseas payment information.
Singtel Dash in Singapore
Dash combines more payment functions in one wallet than its name may suggest. It can hold stored value, make supported QR payments, send money through local payment rails, provide a Visa Virtual Card, support Visa contactless transactions and public transport payments, and offer overseas remittance through Dash Remit.
A Singtel mobile subscription is not required. Dash states that customers can sign up regardless of their mobile service provider.
Dash Visa Virtual Card and Contactless Payments
The Dash Visa Virtual Card provides a 16-digit card number, expiry date and security code inside the app. For participating online merchants, these details can be entered in the same way as a conventional Visa card number.
For physical Visa Contactless payments, compatibility depends on the phone. Dash currently supports Apple Pay-enabled iPhones after the Dash Visa card is added to Apple Wallet, while supported NFC-enabled Android phones can use the Dash Tap & Pay route. Device and operating-system support should be checked against the current Dash compatibility information before relying on contactless access.
Using Dash for MRT and Bus Payments
Dash also supports public transport payments through its Visa payment setup. Bus and MRT transactions are processed through the Dash Visa Account and appear in the transaction history under BUS/MRT. Fare transactions may be accumulated before the final amount is posted, so the timing can differ from an ordinary retail purchase.
This gives Dash a different position from GrabPay in 2026. The old GrabPay Mastercard once provided a card-based transit route, but that card was discontinued; Dash continues to publish a Visa-based transport function.
Dash Account Levels and Transaction Limits
Dash publishes separate limits for unverified users, verified Work Permit holders and verified non-Work Permit holders. The annual cap for verified accounts covers the combined value of wallet spending, remittance and cash-out rather than each category receiving a separate S$100,000 allowance.
| Limit | Not Verified | Verified WP Holder | Verified Non-WP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallet Balance | S$999 | S$3,000 | S$5,000 |
| Daily Spend | S$2,000 | S$3,000 | S$5,000 |
| Monthly Spend | S$2,000 | S$10,000 | S$15,000 |
| Daily Remittance | Not applicable | S$3,000 | S$5,000 |
| Monthly Remittance | Not applicable | S$3,000 | S$25,000 |
| Cash Withdrawal to Bank | Not applicable | S$3,000 | S$5,000 |
| Annual Spend, Remittance and Cash-Out | S$20,000 | S$100,000 | S$100,000 |

Dash Fees That Can Affect Wallet Use
| Fee Type | Published Fee | Applies To |
|---|---|---|
| Selected Cash Top-Up | S$0.50 | 7-Eleven, Singtel Prepaid retailers and Sheng Siong $TM cash top-ups |
| Credit / Debit Card Top-Up | 2% | Card-funded Dash top-ups where the published fee applies |
| PayNow VPA Cash Withdrawal | S$1 | Published PayNow VPA cash-withdrawal route |
| Dormant Wallet | S$2 per month | Accounts with no transaction for 12 months or more under the published fee schedule |
| Visa International Processing | 2.8% | Singapore-dollar Visa transactions processed outside Singapore |
| Remittance Cancellation / Refund Request | S$15 | Qualifying remittance cancellation or refund requests |
No matching rows found.
If a S$100 cash top-up is made through a channel carrying the S$0.50 convenience fee, the resulting wallet credit is S$99.50.
A qualifying S$100 Singapore-dollar Visa transaction processed outside Singapore produces a S$2.80 processing fee at the published 2.8% rate. Foreign-currency transactions can also be affected by the Visa exchange rate.
Card-processing and remittance costs should be separated from ordinary Singapore merchant payments. Dash states that it does not charge a payment fee for ordinary payments at shops, MRT, buses and taxis through the app. For cross-border transfers, the remittance fee and exchange rate can vary by destination and payment route, so the displayed total should be checked against other international transfer costs and FX markups.
Dash Payment Changes Affecting 2026 Users
From 6 June 2026, Dash customers who had not already registered a PayNow Virtual Payment Address became temporarily unable to register a new VPA for Dash top-ups. Dash directs affected users to PayNow QR as an alternative.
From 15 August 2026, GXS stopped being available as a top-up method from within the Dash app. PayNow and the other currently supported funding routes remain subject to their own conditions.
Dash publishes wallet limits and fees in its main Dash FAQ, current funding changes in its top-up information, and Visa and transit conditions in its payment information.
Where Each Digital Wallet Actually Works
Merchant acceptance is easier to understand when the payment rail is identified first. A QR wallet, a Visa virtual card and a discontinued Mastercard product should not be grouped together simply because all three can appear inside a mobile app.
| Payment Situation | GrabPay | ShopeePay | Singtel Dash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grab App Services | Native wallet use | Not a native ShopeePay use | Not a native Dash wallet use |
| Shopee Wallet Checkout | Not the native ShopeePay wallet route | Native wallet use | Not the native ShopeePay wallet route |
| Participating Local QR Merchant | Yes where GrabPay is offered | Yes where ShopeePay is accepted | Yes through supported Dash, FavePay or PayNow routes |
| Generic Visa Contactless Terminal | No current GrabPay Card route | No general Visa wallet card | Yes on compatible devices |
| Online Visa Card Checkout | No current GrabPay Mastercard | No general wallet card number | Yes through Dash Visa Virtual Card where Visa is accepted |
| MRT and Bus | Former card-based route discontinued | No direct ShopeePay transit function listed | Supported through Dash Visa on compatible devices |
| Supported Overseas QR Merchant | Depends on GrabPay availability at the merchant | Yes through listed international QR partner networks for eligible users | QR availability depends on the merchant route; Visa payment is a separate option |
| Transfer Wallet Funds to Local Bank | Eligible transferable balance | Eligible ShopeePay PLUS transferable balance | Eligible verified account, subject to limits and route |
| Dedicated Overseas Remittance | Service availability and eligibility vary | Merchant payments are the clearer cross-border wallet use | Dedicated Dash Remit service |

Why the Funding Source Matters After a Top-Up
Eligible funding source → GrabPay Wallet → merchant spending or eligible transfer. Credit-card and foreign-debit-card top-ups are excluded from the normal transferable balance.
PayNow, eligible local debit card or eGIRO → transferable balance → payments or eligible withdrawal. Credit-card, multi-source-card and foreign-debit-card top-ups remain usable for payments but are not normally withdrawable.
Supported bank, PayNow, card or cash funding → Dash Wallet → supported QR, Visa, transit, transfer or remittance use. Funding method, verification status and account category determine the available route and limit.
A successful top-up does not automatically mean the same amount can later be moved back to a bank. Check the wallet’s transferable-balance rules before using a credit card, foreign debit card or other restricted funding source for money that may need to be withdrawn later.
Three S$100 Wallet Examples
Simple transaction examples show why the payment route can matter more than the headline wallet balance.
Top-up amount: S$100
Published admin fee: 2%
Fee: S$2
Amount charged: S$102
Cash provided: S$100
Published convenience fee: S$0.50
Wallet credit: S$99.50
Transaction amount: S$100
Published processing rate: 2.8%
Processing fee: S$2.80
Foreign-currency transactions can also involve Visa exchange-rate conversion.
These examples isolate the stated fee and do not represent every payment path. Merchant refunds, exchange rates, card-issuer treatment and remittance charges can produce a different final amount.
MAS Regulation and Wallet Balances
The entities behind the three wallets operate within Singapore’s regulated payment-services system. GPay Network (S) Pte. Ltd., ShopeePay Private Limited and SingCash Pte. Ltd., the entity associated with Dash, are listed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore as Major Payment Institutions for regulated payment activities relevant to their services.
GPay Network (S) Pte. Ltd.
ShopeePay Private Limited
SingCash Pte. Ltd.
An e-wallet balance should not be treated as an ordinary bank savings deposit. MAS payment-institution safeguarding requirements and Singapore’s bank Deposit Insurance Scheme are different forms of protection.
The Singapore Deposit Insurance Corporation states that eligible Singapore-dollar deposits such as qualifying savings, current and fixed-deposit balances placed with a Deposit Insurance Scheme member are insured up to S$100,000 per depositor per Scheme member. Stored-value wallet balances are issued within the payment-services structure rather than being ordinary savings or current accounts at a bank.
Major Payment Institutions are subject to customer-money protection requirements under the payment-services regime. Grab’s current terms, for example, describe safeguarding of relevant customer money through a separate safeguarding arrangement. This should not be confused with interest-bearing deposits or with the coverage rules SDIC applies to eligible deposits at participating banks and finance companies.
The exact scope of insured deposits can be checked through the SDIC Deposit Insurance information.
Common Wallet Problems and What Usually Explains Them
The former GrabPay Mastercard was discontinued in 2024. A current GrabPay Wallet balance should not be assumed to have universal Mastercard acceptance.
Check the funding source. GrabPay and ShopeePay both distinguish between balances that can be transferred out and funds that can only be spent.
The QR may belong to a payment scheme that does not accept ShopeePay. Look for ShopeePay or a supported overseas partner mark rather than assuming every QR checkout is interoperable.
An unverified ShopeePay Wallet cannot transfer funds to another ShopeePay user or make a bank transfer. Full verification upgrades the account to ShopeePay PLUS, after which eligible balance can be transferred.
Dash states that users who had not registered a VPA before the 6 June 2026 change are temporarily unable to make a new VPA registration for top-ups. PayNow QR is the published alternative.
Visa contactless support depends on the device and mobile setup. Check Dash’s current compatibility information rather than assuming every NFC phone is supported.
What to Check Before Choosing a Wallet
- Payment rail: determine whether the intended merchant accepts the wallet’s QR scheme, a Visa payment, or an in-app wallet checkout.
- Verification status: higher wallet, spending and transfer limits often require identity verification.
- Funding source: confirm whether a card-funded balance can later be withdrawn or transferred.
- Annual limit: frequent transfers and wallet spending can count toward annual debit or transaction ceilings.
- Overseas route: QR-network coverage, Visa acceptance and remittance are different services with different fee structures.
- Displayed exchange rate: review the SGD amount and any listed processing or remittance fee before authorising an overseas transaction.
- Current app limit: an account may have a lower user-set or platform-set transaction limit than the product’s published maximum.
For local transfers, wallet rules sit on top of Singapore’s underlying bank-transfer infrastructure. Comparing the wallet’s own fee and limit with normal Singapore interbank transfer costs can help identify whether the wallet adds any extra restriction to the payment path.
Digital Wallet FAQ
Is GrabPay still available in Singapore?
Yes. GrabPay Wallet remains available. The discontinued product is the former physical and digital GrabPay Mastercard, which stopped functioning from 1 June 2024.
Can GrabPay Wallet be used everywhere Mastercard is accepted?
No. That broad Mastercard acceptance came from the former GrabPay Card. Current GrabPay Wallet use depends on Grab services and participating merchants or payment routes that offer GrabPay.
Can ShopeePay scan any QR code in Singapore?
No. The merchant must support ShopeePay or a compatible payment route. A QR code alone does not establish ShopeePay acceptance.
Can ShopeePay be used overseas?
Yes, for verified users who enable overseas payments and pay participating merchants on supported international QR partner networks. The foreign amount, exchange rate and converted SGD amount are shown before confirmation.
Do I need a Singtel mobile plan to use Dash?
No. Dash states that it is available regardless of the user’s mobile service provider.
Which wallet can pay directly at Visa Contactless terminals?
Dash provides a current Visa Contactless route on compatible devices. ShopeePay does not provide a general Visa wallet card, while the former GrabPay Mastercard was discontinued.
Which wallet can be used for MRT and bus payments?
Dash currently publishes a transit-payment route through its Dash Visa setup on compatible phones. The former GrabPay Card transit route is no longer available, and ShopeePay does not list a direct public-transport wallet function.
Can money added by credit card always be transferred back to a bank?
No. GrabPay excludes credit-card top-ups from its normal transferable balance, and ShopeePay states that credit-card, multi-source-card and foreign-debit-card top-ups are non-transferable and non-withdrawable.
Are digital wallet balances the same as insured bank deposits?
No. These wallets are payment-service products issued by regulated payment institutions rather than ordinary bank savings accounts. SDIC Deposit Insurance applies to eligible deposits placed with Deposit Insurance Scheme members under its coverage rules.
Verification Notes
Wallet limits, funding rules, merchant acceptance and fees can change independently. GrabPay figures should be checked against the current Grab payment terms. ShopeePay account limits and overseas-payment conditions are maintained in the ShopeePay Help Centre. Dash maintains its account, Visa, transit, remittance and funding rules in the Dash Help Centre.
Regulatory status can be verified through the MAS Financial Institutions Directory. Bank-deposit protection should be checked separately through the SDIC scope of deposit coverage.
